About and method
Remodel Cost Index tracks the prices of materials used to repair, remodel and build homes in the United States, using producer price indexes published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). We are independent and do not sell materials or services.
Data
- Each material is a BLS producer price index by commodity, not seasonally adjusted, named as BLS names it on each page with its series ID and base period.
- "All goods used in home building" is BLS's index of net inputs to residential construction, goods. It includes energy goods used in building as well as materials.
- 12-month change compares a month with the same month a year earlier. Rebased charts divide each index by its value in the start month and multiply by 100.
- BLS revises indexes for four months after first publication, so the latest four months are marked preliminary. We update them when BLS revises.
- Producer prices are what domestic producers receive. They do not include retail markup, delivery or labor, so a contractor's quote can move differently.
Corrections
Tell us the page and the figure and we will check it against BLS and correct it with a dated note. Corrections are free. We never accept payment to change, add or remove anything.
Updates
BLS publishes producer prices monthly, usually in the middle of the following month. Last checked 29 October 2026.
